Prabhas’ The Raja Saab, directed by Maruthi, was released in theaters on January 9. However, the movie flopped badly at the box office and eventually became a black mark in Prabhas’ career.
Later, the movie premiered on JioHotstar, and the OTT backlash was even worse than it was in theaters. However, just before the OTT premiere, reports began circulating on social media claiming that fans were rushing to JioHotstar in huge numbers to watch The Raja Saab. According to these claims, the traffic was so heavy that the platform’s servers reportedly crashed and the streaming service had to quickly upgrade its servers because of the sudden surge in viewers. These claims were widely shared by certain fan pages and promotional accounts, suggesting that Prabhas’ popularity remained unaffected despite the film’s disastrous box office performance.
Recently, though, a completely different situation made people question those earlier claims. The much-awaited India vs New Zealand T20 World Cup final match was streamed live on JioHotstar and created massive viewership numbers. At one point, more than 66 crore viewers were simultaneously watching the match live on the platform. Despite such huge traffic, JioHotstar handled the load smoothly without crashing.
After this, many social media users pointed out that if JioHotstar can manage more than 66 crore viewers during a live cricket match, it is hard to believe that it would crash because of a film like Raja Saab that might have had only 5 to 10 lakh viewers at a time.
This led to widespread mockery and trolling online, with many accusing the star and the film’s PR team of spreading false narratives even for a disaster film like The Raja Saab. Many users commented that there should be a limit to even spread lies.
