Thug Life US Premieres Today: Will 38-Yr Wait Pay Off?

Thug Life, starring Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan TR, and Trisha in the lead roles and directed by Mani Ratnam, is all set for a worldwide theatrical release on June 5th—which is tomorrow.

After Nayagan, Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan are collaborating again after 38 years, and so far, the teaser and songs have generated decent anticipation.

With only a few hours left for release, pre-bookings for Thug Life are underway. Thanks to the combo hype of Kamal and Mani, along with strong promotions from the Thug Life team, bookings are decent in Tamil. However, it still needs to pick up in Telugu.

Thug Life’s U.S. premiere is happening tonight, and we’ll soon get the first reviews from overseas audiences. The initial talk from this premiere is extremely important—it could help the film go to the next level in Tamil and boost traction in the Telugu market.

There’s a lot of goodwill for the Kamal-Mani Ratnam combination, so if the word of mouth is positive, the film could really take off in India.

In Telugu, there’s also a vacuum at the box office. Last week’s release Bhairavam flopped, and there are no major releases next week either, as Hari Hara Veera Mallu seems postponed. So if the talk from U.S. premieres is good, Thug Life could perform very well in the Telugu states as well.

Very soon, we’ll know whether Thug Life will become a blockbuster success, and if Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam’s reunion after 38 years will truly pay off—with the U.S. premiere tonight being the first big test.
