US BO: Good Start, But Crucial Weekend

Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One has had a good start at the domestic box office, considering it was a midweek release. The film, directed by Christopher McQuarrie, made $17 million on its opening day, including a record-breaking $6.5 million from Tuesday night previews.

With positive audience reception, the movie is expected to have a five-day opening of $80-90 million or more, surpassing the previous record of Fall Out, which did around $60 million in its opening weekend.

While Mission: Impossible movies usually don’t have massive opening weekends, they tend to have strong legs at the box office. The previous installment, Mission Impossible: Fallout, became the highest-grossing film in the franchise, with a total of $791 million worldwide. The global opening weekend gross is expected to be approximately $230–250 million.

Given its high production budget of $290 million due to pandemic-related challenges, the film will needs to sustain big time in the coming days at the global box office. A sequel, Dead Reckoning Part Two, is already planned for release next summer and is expected to have a lower budget.
