Ustaad No Telangana Hikes: Can PK Pull Neutral Audiences?

Pawan Kalyan’s Ustaad Bhagat Singh makers finally opened advance bookings in Telangana after waiting for a government order on ticket price hikes that never materialized. Production house Mythri Movie Makers began ticket sales on Monday night at 10 PM with the existing pricing structure. The team decided to move forward without waiting further, avoiding last-minute uncertainty. That was a sensible move from them, or else chaos would have been repeated, as it happened during the time of Prabhas’ Raja Saab release.

Unlike in Andhra Pradesh, the film will not have benefit shows in Telangana. The screenings will begin directly after 7 AM on release day. Meanwhile, in Andhra Pradesh, advance bookings had already started early in the morning, with some theatres opening sales as early as 4 AM in major centers.

From the producers’ perspective, the absence of a ticket price hike in Telangana may appear slightly disappointing. However, trade analysts see a positive angle in this development. Ticket prices in multiplexes are expected to remain between Rs.295 and Rs.350, while single-screen theatres will charge around Rs.175 to Rs.200. These relatively moderate prices could make the film more accessible to general audiences.

Industry observers point out that Ustaad Bhagat Singh is not a massive visual spectacle made on a huge budget. Therefore, demanding significantly higher ticket prices solely based on Pawan Kalyan’s star power might not have appealed to the average moviegoer. With controlled pricing, the film now has better chances of attracting larger footfall. Also, in the last decade, Pawan Kalyan films have not been able to attract audiences outside his cult fan base. Neutral audiences largely have kind of stopped watching his films in theaters. So, these affordable rates could bring them back into theatres.

In contrast, Andhra Pradesh has approved a price hike, allowing multiplex tickets to increase by Rs.125 and single screens by Rs.100. This means ticket prices there could range around Rs.302 for multiplexes and Rs.200 to Rs.250 for single screens.

Trade experts believe that if Ustaad Bhagat Singh receives unanimously positive reviews, it can still post strong collections despite the Dhurandhar 2 wave. Since the film is primarily focused on the domestic market, with no release in other languages, strong performance in the Telugu states will be crucial for recovery.

Notably, theatres have been struggling in recent weeks due to the absence of big releases, especially those catering to mass audiences. Exhibitors now expect Ustaad Bhagat Singh to bring much-needed relief to theater exhibitors and distributors.
