The Telugu film industry has been facing challenges in recent months over ticket pricing and regulatory issues. A recent development from the Supreme Court of India has now brought relief to filmmakers.
Earlier, the Telangana High Court had issued an order related to ticket price approvals. According to the directive, producers were required to apply for ticket price hikes and related permissions 90 days before a film’s release.
Many producers felt this rule was difficult to follow. Film release dates often change frequently, and many projects finalise their release plans only a few weeks in advance.
Because of this concern, production house Mythri Movie Makers approached the Supreme Court of India. The appeal came close to the release of their upcoming film Ustad Bhagat Singh.
During the hearing, the Supreme Court questioned the practicality of the rule. The court noted that many films confirm their release dates only a few days before the actual launch.
The judges also observed that the Telangana High Court may not have followed complete procedural steps before issuing the directive.
The Supreme Court pointed out that expecting producers to apply 90 days in advance may not be realistic for the film industry.
Following the hearing, the Supreme Court of India issued a stay on the earlier order from the Telangana High Court.
This means the rule requiring producers to apply for ticket price approvals three months before release will not be enforced for now.
With the stay in place, filmmakers can apply for ticket price revisions and other permissions without the fixed 90 day timeline.
Industry observers believe this decision provides temporary relief to producers and distributors in the Tollywood sector.
