The Guntur Fifth Additional District Court has imposed 20 years of imprisonment and Rs 70,000 as fine for the three accused in gang rape of a Asha worker in Palnadu district in 2022.
On the fateful day, the 46-year-old woman was lured into a nearby forest near Bellankonda Vari Palem. The three men, Sheelam Anji (22), Saviti China Anji (22) and Sheelam Byswami (31), sexually assaulted her and then smashed her head with a stone.
On September 16, 2022, the victim, an Asha worker from Anupu Chenchu Colony in Macherla mandal went missing. Her husband Lasakar Naik lodged a complaint with the police after some villagers saw her with the accused.
The trio took her to the forest to look for her lost mobile phone. When the incident occured, it made headlines for days as public demanded strict action against the accused.
Judge Neelima gave the judgement. Though it took nearly three years, the judgement is being hailed as exemplary in similar cases.
