YSR District is YSR Kadapa Now

The Andhra Pradesh government issued a GO notifying that YSR district will henceforth be called YSR Kadapa district. Initially, the district was called Cudapah that was later changed to Kadapa in 2005.

In 2010, the then Congress government decided to rename Kadapa as YSR district. While the initial proposal was to name it YS Rajasekhara Reddy Kadapa, the name was too long and they named it YSR district, going with the popular name of YS Rajasekhara Reddy.

Kadapa or YSR Kadapa is the heart of Rayalaseema as it is connected to 8 districts of Rayalaseema. It has a glorious heritage and culture. It is one of the 26 districts in Andhra Pradesh.

The decision to change the name was taken in the recently concluded Cabinet meeting. The past government called Kadapa YSR district removing Kadapa from the name.

This was opposed by many people’s organisation, people’s rights bodies, intellectuals and opposition parties. Touring the district, CM Chandrababu promised name change.

Minister Satyakumar wrote a letter to the CM objecting to the name YSR district. It was Jagan’s craze on names that led to his decision, he complained.

Following representations from people, the Cabinet came to a decision and initiated name change. Kadapa is historically considered an auspicious name as Kadapa is considered the threshold to Tirumala Tirupati.
