While discussions around local body elections are still ongoing in Telangana, neighbouring Andhra Pradesh has already moved a step ahead.
The Andhra Pradesh government has officially decided to hold local body polls soon. Elections for ZPTC, MPTC, and municipal corporations have already been conducted in several parts of the state, with the ruling party securing a sweeping majority.
Encouraged by the results, the AP government has requested the Election Commission to conduct local body elections in four phases. State Election Commissioner Neelam Sahani made the formal announcement on Tuesday.
“We will conduct local body elections in four phases. The government will also be consulted regarding the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). These were already used in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar. A decision will soon be taken on procurement and deployment,” said Neelam Sahani.
This news brings hope to many local aspirants aiming to enter public service. For the state government, having elected representatives at the grassroots level ensures better implementation of welfare schemes and direct feedback from the ground.
