The Election Commission of India is set to address strong criticism over vote chori allegations in a press conference on August 17. The briefing will be held at the National Media Center on Raisina Road at 3 pm. The timing has gained attention as it comes just a day before Rahul Gandhi’s Voter Rights Yatra in Bihar.
This is the first major press conference by the ECI since the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. Anticipation is high because the Supreme Court recently ordered the Commission to present the list of voters excluded from Bihar’s electoral roll.
Rahul Gandhi has alleged that nearly 65 lakh names were left out of the Bihar voter list. He further claimed that similar voter exclusion has taken place in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka. The opposition leader accused the ECI of “choreographing” elections to benefit the ruling BJP.
The matter has already sparked heated debates in Parliament. The Election Commission published a revised voter list before the Bihar Assembly polls scheduled for November 2025. With the controversy continuing to grow, the upcoming press conference has become a key political event.
Citizens and political observers across the country are waiting closely to see whether the Commission will address these allegations or attempt to counter what it calls propaganda. The outcome of this briefing could have wide implications for the credibility of the electoral process in India.
