AP Municipal Elections: Is the State Bracing for Poll-Day Violence?

With just a day left for the Andhra Pradesh municipal elections, the scale of security arrangements raises an important question. Is November 1 likely to witness fresh clashes between rival political parties?

The police department has deployed 36,351 personnel across 4,372 sensitive locations to ensure peaceful polling across the state. The extensive security measures suggest that authorities are taking no chances given the political tensions surrounding these elections.

Between October 15 and 29, police registered 261 cases for violations of the election code. A total of 107 people were arrested while 733 others received notices under Section 35(3) of the BNSS. Police also bound over 1,05,767 people as a preventive measure to avoid violence and other disturbances.

Authorities have also stepped up action against those with pending criminal cases. Police executed 2,726 non-bailable warrants across the state. Vehicle checks resulted in the seizure of ₹4.91 lakh in cash, 4,463 litres of liquor worth around ₹12 lakh, 114 litres of illicit liquor and 496 kg of cannabis valued at ₹2.90 crore.

Meanwhile, the State Election Commission has confirmed that preparations for the November 1 municipal elections are complete. SEC Secretary Mallikarjuna said polling will take place in the remaining 92 urban local bodies after eight of the 100 local bodies were elected unanimously.

Polling will be held from 7 AM to 5 PM. With cyclone-related weather concerns affecting some areas, the Election Commission is also prepared to conduct polling on November 2 if district collectors recommend a change. Counting of votes and declaration of results are scheduled for November 3.

However, the unusually extensive security arrangements cannot be ignored. The deployment of thousands of police personnel, preventive arrests and execution of pending warrants indicate the level of caution surrounding the elections.

Does this suggest that November 1 could turn into a day of confrontation between rival political parties? The authorities may be preparing for every possible situation, but the real test will be whether political parties allow voters to exercise their right without fear or disruption.
