AP Municipal Election Results 2026
The Andhra Pradesh municipal election results have delivered a significant political message. The TDP-led NDA has registered a strong performance across urban local bodies, while the YSR Congress Party has suffered a major setback in Pulivendula, the home turf of party president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.
The alliance’s victories across several municipalities have reinforced its political position at the local level. However, one result stands out for a different reason. In Nandikotkur, YSRCP managed to retain its position, with party leader Byreddy Siddharth Reddy emerging as an important local political figure.
The contrast between Pulivendula and Nandikotkur raises an interesting question about leadership, grassroots influence and the future direction of YSRCP.
Pulivendula: Jagan’s Political Fortress Falls
The most politically significant result for the TDP-led alliance came from Pulivendula. For the first time, TDP captured the municipality associated with Jagan and his family’s political influence.
The NDA secured 37 of the 40 wards, with TDP winning 34, BJP two and Jana Sena one. YSRCP was restricted to just three wards.
TDP chairperson candidate Thugutla Geetha Kumari defeated YSRCP candidate Y.S. Prameelamma by 13,875 votes.
The result is a major embarrassment for Jagan. Losing control of a municipality that has long been associated with his family’s political influence carries significance beyond the local body election. It gives the TDP-led alliance an opportunity to underline the changing political mood in the region.
Nandikotkur: Byreddy Makes his Mark
Nandikotkur produced a contrasting result. YSRCP managed to retain the municipality, with its chairperson candidate Fathima Bee winning by 2,634 votes.
The victory has brought attention to Byreddy Siddharth Reddy’s local political influence. At a time when YSRCP is facing organisational challenges across the state, the party’s performance in Nandikotkur provides some relief.
Major municipal victories: TDP drives the NDA performance
The NDA’s performance was not limited to Pulivendula. TDP secured important victories in several municipalities, strengthening its presence across different regions.
Some of the prominent TDP chairperson victories included:
Other important TDP victories reported in the municipal results included Kuppam, Penukonda, Tadipatri, Madanapalle, Kalyandurgam, Kadiri, Venkatagiri, Sullurupeta, Jaggayyapeta, Mandapeta, Kovvur, Macherla, Palasa-Kasibugga, Jangareddygudem, Atmakur and Uyyuru.
The results indicate the alliance’s ability to perform across different regions rather than depending on a handful of constituencies.
Jana Sena strengthens its position within the alliance
Jana Sena also made its presence felt in the municipal elections. Its victories in several towns underline the party’s contribution to the NDA’s overall performance.
Some of the important Jana Sena chairperson victories included:
The party’s performance demonstrates that it is an important electoral partner for TDP. Its local victories also give Jana Sena a stronger organisational presence in municipalities where it has secured public support.
BJP and other notable results
The BJP also secured municipal victories. Pilla Ramakumari won the Elamanchili chairperson contest, adding to the NDA’s overall tally.
In Nellore, YSRCP mayor candidate Joshua suffered a personal setback after losing his own fifth division in Chintareddypalem to TDP candidate Abraham by 398 votes. Losing one’s own division while seeking the mayor’s post is a politically embarrassing outcome.
TDP candidates Manne Srinivasa Prasad and Katari Hemalatha secured the mayoral posts in Tirupati and Chittoor respectively.
Unopposed victories gave the NDA an early advantage
The alliance had already secured an advantage before counting day through unanimous victories. Of the 17 chairperson posts elected unopposed, TDP secured 15, Jana Sena one and BJP one.
These unopposed victories helped the NDA strengthen its position even before votes were counted.
The wider election covered 92 urban local bodies, comprising 13 municipal corporations and 79 municipalities and nagar panchayats. The reported turnout was 62.16%, with 60,22,411 votes polled out of an electorate of 96,89,061.
The political message: NDA strengthens its urban base, YSRCP faces a leadership test
The municipal results point to three important political conclusions.
First, the TDP-led NDA has consolidated its position in urban local bodies. Its performance across several important municipalities, along with its unopposed victories, reflects the strength of the alliance at the local level.
Second, Jana Sena has demonstrated that it is more than a supporting partner. Its municipal victories give the party an opportunity to expand its local organisation and political influence.
Third, YSRCP faces a serious organisational and leadership challenge. Pulivendula’s result is a major setback for Jagan, but Nandikotkur shows that the party can still depend on local leaders capable of delivering victories.
The municipal election verdict is clear: the NDA has strengthened its urban political base, while YSRCP needs to examine its leadership structure, local organisation and ability to retain its traditional strongholds.
