AP Speaker Ayyannapatrudu said some MLAs are taking their monthly pay without attending the Assembly. He questioned how such actions can be justified. He raised this issue while attending the Speakers’ conference in Uttar Pradesh with Deputy Speaker Raghurama Raju.
Ayyannapatrudu spoke about the accountability of MLAs to their voters. He said some members never attend the Assembly. They do not take part in any discussions. Yet, they continue to collect their salaries.
He asked if such behaviour would not make them lose public respect. He called it immoral. Ayyannapatrudu said there are no rules to remove such members. He added that the law must be changed to bring in a no work no pay system.
He also said people should get the power to recall such MLAs. According to him, this would make elected representatives more responsible. It would also force them to attend the Assembly. Such reforms, he said, are necessary.
The AP Speaker’s comments have drawn wide attention in Andhra Pradesh. Many citizens agree with his views. They feel it is the duty of MLAs to attend the Assembly. Voters expect them to raise public issues and take part in debates.
People also believe such laws would improve accountability. They want their representatives to respect the mandate given to them. Many feel that these changes would strengthen democracy in the state.
