Center Brings New Headache to Telangana

A half of the Special Economic Zones (SEZ) in Telangana could lose their status if the Union Government’s new guidelines on SEZ operations come into force. Several thousands of acres of land is lying vacant and there were other anomalies in the way these zones functioned across the nation.

Telangana is among the states with the most number of SEZs — 64 — but only 30 are operational at present. Center is mulling to cancel SEZ status if operations have not begun within three years of getting all approvals.

In some of these SEZs, the state government spent huge money for land acquisition and creation of facilities. The state government will lose big if these guidelines become law. So, the State government is gearing up to begin some activity or other in these SEZs.
