A global condom shorage is looming large as Coronavirus Pandemic shuts down factories and disrupts supply chains. Around half of the World is confined to indoors and the governments worldwide have ordered the closure of businesses deemed non-essential.
Malaysia — one of the world’s top rubber producers and a major source of condoms is also under Lockdown and as a result, the production of condoms is hit across the globe. Many major companies in Malayasia are operating only with 50% of their workforce.
UNO is worried that this shortage ould lead to an increase in unintended pregnancies which may have dangerous health and social consequences for adolescent girls, women and their partners and families. This shortage could also lead to a rise in unsafe abortions and an increased risk of sexually transmitted infections and HIV
Meanwhile, several countries are reporting a spike in Condom sales as people get to spend more time with their partners than before.
