India Bans Real-Money Games, ₹30,000 Cr at Stake

The Parliament of India has passed the Online Gaming Bill banning real-money online games, citing rising cases of gambling addiction, money laundering, and financial fraud.

This decision was much needed. Many families have been destroyed after members got addicted to online betting and fell into heavy debts. I personally know cases where people have succumbed to debt stress, showing how serious the problem has become.

The impact on the industry is huge. India’s ₹30,000 Cr plus gaming market, led by platforms like Dream11, Games24x7, and MPL, now faces a complete collapse. Thousands of jobs are at stake, and from tomorrow, even the teams working behind Dream11 will be left unemployed.

There is also a big blow to advertising. Bollywood stars and cricketers who promoted these betting platforms are now under fire for endorsing something that pushed so many youngsters into financial trouble. Their credibility will be questioned.

Some people are already asking what happens to state lotteries, which also involve money-based gaming. That remains an open question.

The next urgent step should be action against online loan apps. These apps are destroying lives by trapping youngsters in debt and then resorting to harassment and blackmail. If the government is serious about protecting people, this needs immediate attention.

This bold move by Parliament is a strong strike against gambling addiction. It may save thousands of families from falling into financial ruin, even though it comes with heavy economic consequences for the gaming industry.
