Jagan's Stand on Election Reforms

YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s latest statements have raised questions about his political consistency. The YSRCP chief admits that his party made a mistake by supporting the law governing the appointment of Election Commissioners. At the same time, he accuses the Chandrababu Naidu government of undermining free and fair elections in Andhra Pradesh. His recent actions have added another twist to the story.

In 2023, YSRCP supported the central law governing the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners. Now Jagan says that decision was a mistake. He wants a more neutral selection process involving the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice of India and the Leader of the Opposition. He also wants similar safeguards for appointing the State Election Commissioner.

The demand for independent election authorities deserves serious consideration. But Jagan must also answer a basic question: if the appointment process was flawed, why did his party support it in Parliament? His admission comes only now, when YSRCP is in opposition, and the party is questioning the conduct of election authorities in Andhra Pradesh.

Jagan has accused the Chandrababu Naidu government of intimidating opposition candidates and obstructing nominations during the ongoing local body elections. He has also targeted State Election Commissioner Anil Chandra, alleging that the official is acting in favour of the ruling alliance.

Yet his actions have created an obvious contradiction. After strongly criticising Anil at a press conference in Tadepalli and questioning his impartiality, Jagan approached the same commissioner with a petition over alleged election irregularities.

The larger issue is political consistency. Jagan supported the CEC appointment law when it came before Parliament. He now regrets that decision. He questions the SEC’s impartiality but still seeks its intervention.

YS Jagan cannot demand public trust in institutions only when he expects them to act in his favour. If he wants election reforms and a fair process, he must apply the same standards to his own party’s past decisions and present actions.
