Jana Sena Achieves 100% Strike Rate in AP Municipal Elections
JanaSena has repeated its 100% strike rate in the Andhra Pradesh municipal elections, winning all 20 mayoral and chairperson posts it contested as part of the TDP-led alliance. The performance marks another electoral success for Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan’s party after its clean sweep in the 2024 Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.
Under the seat-sharing agreement with the TDP and BJP, JanaSena was allotted four municipal corporations, 18 municipalities and three nagar panchayats. Elections were held for two corporations, 15 municipalities and three nagar panchayats, with JanaSena securing all 20 posts.
The party registered important victories in Vijayawada and Eluru municipal corporations. Vangaveeti Radhakrishna won the Vijayawada mayoral contest, while Reddy Appalanaidu emerged victorious in Eluru. These results have strengthened JanaSena’s presence in major urban centres.
The Vijayawada victory carries particular political significance, as JanaSena does not have an MLA representing the city. By securing the mayoral post, the party has gained a prominent position in an important urban centre while continuing its alliance with the TDP.
Pawan Kalyan‘s Pithapuram constituency also delivered a strong result for JanaSena. Its municipal chairperson candidate Danam Lazar Babu defeated YSRCP candidate Pedapati Rajesh Kumar by a reported margin of 9,235 votes.
Of the 36 wards in Pithapuram Municipality, the ruling alliance secured 25, including three won unanimously. JanaSena accounted for 19 wards, including the unanimous victories, while TDP won five and BJP one. YSRCP managed to win only one ward.
However, the election also exposed internal challenges for the alliance. Ten independent candidates won ward seats in Pithapuram, including eight rebels from the TDP and JanaSena and two from YSRCP. Their victories showed that local dissatisfaction over ticket allocation remained a factor despite the alliance’s overall success.
Beyond its existing strongholds, JanaSena used the municipal elections to expand into new political areas. The party secured leadership positions in municipalities including Tuni, Samarlakota, Darsi, Chilakaluripet, Amalapuram, Pedana and Madakasira.
The party also accommodated leaders who had moved from the TDP and YSRCP in some constituencies. This strategy helped JanaSena build local leadership and establish a presence in areas where its organisation was previously limited.
The latest results follow JanaSena’s performance in the 2024 elections, when it won all 21 Assembly and two Lok Sabha seats it contested. The municipal outcome has reinforced the party’s reputation for carefully selecting constituencies within the alliance.
For Pawan Kalyan, the results offer more than another electoral achievement. They provide an opportunity to strengthen JanaSena’s organisational base beyond its traditional areas of influence and improve its bargaining position within the ruling coalition.
The 100% strike rate applies specifically to the 20 mayoral and chairperson positions contested in this round, not to every municipal ward or the seats where elections are yet to be held.
