The reported differences between Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan over seat sharing have raised questions about the future of the TDP-Jana Sena alliance.
Pawan Kalyan has reportedly sought a larger share of seats, while reports of his recent remarks about Chandrababu Naidu’s 2023 arrest have reportedly upset sections of the TDP cadre. His absence from a crucial Cabinet meeting on October 11 also attracted attention, although Jana Sena sources attributed it to prior engagements.
These developments have added to speculation about the relationship between the two leaders. However, they do not by themselves establish a serious rift.
The bigger question is why Jana Sena should depend entirely on TDP for local body elections. The 2024 Assembly elections demonstrated the strength of the alliance, but local polls offer a different opportunity. They can reveal each party’s actual support at the grassroots level.
An Opportunity to Test Ground Strength
Jana Sena has its own cadre, leaders and supporters. Contesting more seats would help Pawan Kalyan assess the party’s growth and establish a stronger independent identity. A good performance would also improve Jana Sena’s position in future alliance negotiations. Both parties can continue working together while ensuring that their respective strengths receive fair recognition.
Local body elections should be about winning public support, not simply accommodating political partners. If seat-sharing negotiations become difficult, Jana Sena should consider its options rather than compromise on every demand.
For Pawan Kalyan, the challenge is to balance alliance responsibilities with his party’s long-term ambitions. The real test is whether Jana Sena can prove its strength independently while remaining a partner in the ruling coalition.
