KCR to Take Reservations in Telangana to 62%

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhara Rao seem to be working on the execution of two of his most difficult promises. TRS promised 12% reservations to Muslims and STs in its 2014 Manifestos. However, that would increase the reservations beyond 50% which will not be allowed by the Indian Constitution.

However, Tamil Nadu has more than 50% reservations by bringing a special act. KCR is also thinking on the same lines and is planning to convene a special assembly session to bring this act. STs used to have 6% reservation in United State and Muslim reservations were struck down by the courts after YSR brought them.

The commissions appointed by the state government to study the socio-economic conditions of Muslims and STs. The commissions recommended 12% reservations to Muslims and 9-10% reservations to STs. There are 12% Muslims in Telangana and 9.08% ST population. Some other castes may be added which will take that to 10%.

If these recommendations are executed, reservations will go up to 61-62%. Tamil Nadu has reservations of 69% by bringing in a special act and getting the reservations in Section 9 of Indian Constitution which is immune to Law intervention. So, KCR is planning to take the same route. This will also strengthen TRS in those sections but will likely to irk General category people.
