LED industry falls short on Naidu’s target

chandrababu naidu ambitions on andhra pradeshAndhra Pradesh government had set a target of installing over 5.7 lakh LED streetlights across its 110 municipalities by June 2015 in the direction to conserve energy. The state has installed around 60,000 LED streetlights in Vizag after cyclone Hudhud but is likely to miss the target of 5.7 LED streetlights.

The industry players expressed their inability to supply the requisite number of LED lights due to capacity constraints. They say that the manufacturers in India make 15 lakh LED lights per year, which translates into a production of 1.25 lakh LED lights per month.

While operating at the current capacities, the industry will require over four months to make 5.7 lakh LED streetlights for AP alone and this time frame is also when they do not cater to any other market in India. In that sense, the 5.7 Lakh target may be achieved only in one more year’s time.
