Sources say that she filed her nomination just as a backup. It is usual practice for candidates to have a backup from their families in case their nominations are rejected on technical grounds.

This is the first time Balakrishna has opted for a backup nomination. Since it is a high-stake election in Andhra Pradesh, apparently he does not want to take any risk.

Hindupur is the bastion of the Telugu Desam Party. The party won every single election ever since its inception.

Even in Jagan’s wave in 2019, Balakrishna won from Hindupur with an even better majority than in 2014. This is when TDP won only three seats in Rayalaseema and when Chandrababu’s majority also got decreased.

In Hindupur, Balakrishna’s rival is Deepika who belongs to the BC community. Deepika is the wife of Venugopal Reddy, a Tier-2 leader of the Hindupur YSR Congress. Her parents belong to the Kuruba community and her husband belongs to the Reddy community.

Jagan Mohan Reddy completely relied on the caste combinations to defeat Balakrishna but all surveys so far are indicating a comfortable victory for the actor-politician.

It is interesting to note that Mohammed Iqbal who contested and lost over Balakrishna in 2019 resigned as MLC and joined the Telugu Desam Party. Iqbal’s MLC tenure is there until 2027 but he still chose to leave YSR Congress.
