It is known that the Central government will be conducting a country-wide census in 2027. The Home Ministry issued a gazette notification to this end on June 16, 2025.
Accordingly, the state government has given green signal to census. The census will begin on March 1, 2027, in the state of Andhra Pradesh.
GAD chief secretary SS Rawat issued orders to this affect. The census will begin on March 1, 2027, in the country and in AP. However, it has to be noted that the Central government will carry out census in two phases.
The first phase will begin on October 1, 2026 in Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. In the rest of the country, the census will be carried out on March 1, 2027.
Incidentally, this will be the first caste and population census since 1931. It will also be the first digital census in the country. It will be carried out through mobile apps and online self enumeration.
