Telangana Rajya Sabha MPs: Assets and Criminal Cases

The Rajya Sabha is expected to be a House of experience, knowledge and public service. But the latest ADR report on sitting MPs from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh raises an uncomfortable question: Are wealth and political influence becoming more important than merit when parties select their candidates?

Telangana tops the country, with five of its seven Rajya Sabha MPs (71%) declaring criminal cases. It also leads in serious criminal cases, with 43% of its MPs falling under this category. Andhra Pradesh ranks fourth in declared criminal cases, with five of its 11 MPs (45%) disclosing cases. These figures do not mean the MPs have been convicted, but they certainly invite scrutiny.

The wealth figures are equally striking. Four of Telangana‘s seven MPs (57%) have declared assets exceeding ₹100 crore. Andhra Pradesh follows with five of its 11 MPs (45%) in the same category. Together, the two states account for nine of India’s 32 Rajya Sabha MPs with assets above ₹100 crore.

Telangana’s seven MPs have combined declared assets of approximately ₹8,310 crore, the highest among all states. Punjab comes second with ₹5,729 crore, while Andhra Pradesh stands fourth with ₹1,949 crore.

The party-wise figures are just as revealing. The BRS ranks second nationally, with its three Rajya Sabha MPs declaring combined assets of ₹5,524 crore. The TDP stands sixth with ₹1,007 crore, while the YSRCP is seventh with ₹683 crore. The BJP tops the list with ₹8,270 crore across 111 MPs.

These numbers raise a larger question about political priorities. Rajya Sabha candidates are elected by MLAs, but party leadership largely decides whom to nominate. Loyalty, influence, financial strength and political connections can all shape that decision.

There is nothing wrong with wealthy individuals entering Parliament. But should money and influence matter more than public service and the ability to contribute to lawmaking?

A Rajya Sabha seat should be an opportunity to serve the country, not a reward for wealth or political influence. Political parties need to look beyond money and connections when choosing their representatives.
