Roja disputes the Illathur MPTC recount.
Roja is back in the headlines, and as usual, it is not for the right reasons. This time, the scene shifted to the Illathur MPTC counting centre in Nagari, where the former minister staged a protest over an election result.
According to Roja, the YSRCP candidate was initially declared the winner by 10 votes. But after a recount, the result was reversed, with the TDP candidate winning by three votes. Claiming that her candidate had been cheated, Roja demanded another recount and broke down in front of the counting centre.
However, the counting dispute was only part of the show. A video of Roja losing her temper when an aide offered her a water bottle during her protest has also attracted attention. She reportedly threw the bottle and lashed out at those around her.
One has to wonder whether every electoral setback now needs such a dramatic performance. If there are genuine doubts about the counting, there are proper way to challenge the result. A protest can make a political point, but throwing a tantrum hardly strengthens the argument.
Nagari voters have already delivered their verdict on Roja’s political fortunes. Yet, she seems determined to remain in the spotlight, even if a counting centre and a water bottle become the day’s talking points.
Perhaps the real challenge for Roja is not getting attention, but finding a more convincing reason for it.
