CBN Should Preserve SPB Legacy With The Dignity It Deserves!

Former Vice-president Venkaiah Naidu, former Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya, and Minister Sridhar Babu unveiled the statue of legendary SP Balasubrahmanyam at Ravindra Bharathi earlier today. The event took place amid heightened security and political sensitivity.

Over the past few days, some groups in Telangana opposed installing the statue of an Andhra singer in the state. They argued that Ravindra Bharathi should remain dedicated only to Telangana poets and artists. This opposition triggered protests and public debate.

Claims were also made that SPB refused to sing the Telangana Anthem Jaya Jayahe Telangana in 2004. There is no documentary evidence to support this allegation. Even Kalvakuntla Kavitha, active during the Telangana agitation, said she was unaware of such an incident.

The timing of these claims suggests an attempt to build opposition against the statue. SPB’s contribution to Telugu music and Indian cinema remains unmatched. Recently, a street in Chennai where he lived was named after him in recognition.

Despite this, a Telugu-born legend faced resistance in the Telugu land itself. The statue unveiling happened after police placed agitators under house arrest. Security was intensified around Ravindra Bharathi to avoid any untoward incidents.

Concerns remain that the situation could worsen if the statue is vandalised in the future. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy stayed away from the inauguration. He avoided responding to the issue and gave the event a miss at the last minute.

This cautious approach indicated his reluctance to offend protesting groups. The developments reflect how sensitive the issue has become. Many see this as an unfortunate turn of events.

The situation presents an opportunity for the Chandrababu Naidu government to honour the legend. Installing a statue of SPB in Andhra Pradesh would give him a fitting tribute. His legacy deserves to be preserved with dignity.

SPB also did not receive the respect he deserved from the film industry. Even after his passing, recognition from the industry remained limited. This has added to the larger debate around honouring his legacy.
