Stop Statues Of SP Balasubrahmanyam!

SPB statue debate in Telangana

SP Balasubrahmanyam’s statue was planned for installation inside Ravindra Bharathi. The state government approved it, and the unveiling was set for December 15. The move soon drew objections from a few Telangana activists who questioned placing an Andhra-born icon at a Telangana cultural venue.

These activists argued that figures like Gaddar and Ande Sri should receive priority. Their remarks spread quickly and triggered debates across social media and cultural groups. The discussion widened beyond the statue and turned into a larger regional argument.

Rumours also surfaced claiming SPB refused to sing the “Jaya Jayahe Telangana” song in 2004. There is no documentary proof for such a claim. This angle was brought up now only to justify the opposition to the statue.

SPB’s contribution to Telugu music and Indian cinema stands unmatched. A street in Chennai was named after him recently, honouring his legacy. Yet, a Telugu legend now faces disrespect in his own land, and that too from fellow Telugu people.

SPB passed away during the COVID pandemic. The Telugu Film Industry did not hold a formal homage meeting, citing lockdown restrictions. The lockdown ended long ago, but no one revisited the tribute once normalcy returned.

Many heroes, directors and producers built careers with his songs and earned huge recognition through his voice. But when he passed away, very few stood up for him. Now the controversy over his statue adds another layer of disregard.

A statue will not change SPB’s reputation or elevate his stature. The way we treat our legends reflects how we value our heritage. Rejecting him over regional lines creates a loss for Telangana itself.

If honouring him leads to conflict, people should step back from installing statues or organising tributes. Opposition based on region or religion only diminishes the gesture. SPB lives through his songs, and generations will continue to celebrate his legacy. A statue cannot add anything to the greatness he already earned.
