Supreme Court: Stray Dog Bite Deaths, Govts To Pay

The Supreme Court of India has ruled that both the Central and state governments must take responsibility for deaths caused by dog bites. The court said governments are liable to compensate families of victims. The order addresses rising public concern over stray dog attacks.

The Supreme Court stated that governments are responsible for the current situation. It pointed to a complete failure in controlling the stray dog menace. The court observed that the problem has grown manifold due to lack of timely and effective action.

The issue of stray dogs has remained contentious for years. Many residents say strays pose a serious threat in housing colonies and near workplaces. Taking note of rising deaths, the court had earlier directed that strays be vaccinated and moved to rehabilitation centres.

That order faced opposition from animal rights groups. They argued such steps violate animal welfare principles. Despite this, many citizens have welcomed the latest ruling, citing repeated fatal attacks involving stray dogs.

In several cases, even young children have lost their lives due to dog attacks. The court’s decision reflects growing concern over public safety. It places accountability on authorities to act and prevent further loss of life.
