Pawan Kalyan Faces Backlash Over Alliance Seat Sharing

The TDP, despite being the ruling party in Andhra Pradesh, has agreed to share a significant number of seats with its alliance partners, Janasena and the BJP, for the upcoming local body elections. Janasena and the BJP have secured around 35% of the seats, along with several key mayoral posts that might otherwise have gone to the TDP. Against this backdrop, the criticism directed at Pawan Kalyan by some Janasena supporters has raised a question: what more did they expect from the seat-sharing deal?

The TDP has a strong political presence across Andhra Pradesh and is leading the state government. In such a situation, sharing a substantial number of seats with its allies involves compromises of its own. Yet, Pawan Kalyan has managed to secure a significant share for Jana Sena and the BJP despite the TDP’s position in the alliance.

Key mayoral posts like Vijayawada, Kakinada, Rajahmundry, Srikakulam, Anantapur and Eluru were allotted to alliance. These positions have gone to Jana Sena and the BJP rather than the TDP. If these allocations stand as described, they represent an important part of the seat-sharing arrangement and show the extent to which the alliance partners have been accommodated.

Vijayawada is particularly significant because the mayor’s post carries considerable political importance. The decision to allot the seat to Janasena has added another dimension to the discussion over how the alliance is distributing key positions. For the TDP, sharing such an important post means making room for its partner rather than keeping it within its own party.

Yet some Jana Sena supporters appear unhappy with the arrangement. From this perspective, the focus should be on what the party has secured through negotiations rather than on criticising its leader. Jana Sena supporters may have wanted a larger share, while TDP supporters may have expected their party to contest more seats. Such differences are common in coalition politics.

However, the question remains: if Janasena has secured a substantial share of seats and several important mayoral positions through negotiations, why are some of its supporters directing their anger at Pawan Kalyan?
