Tensions erupted in Punganur in Andhra Pradesh’s Annamayya district on the first day of local body election nominations. Workers of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) clashed while heading to file nominations. The confrontation quickly escalated into stone-pelting, leaving several TDP workers injured and multiple vehicles damaged.
Rajampet MP Peddireddy Mithun Reddy arrived at the Punganur municipality office with a large convoy and candidates contesting for the municipal chairperson and ward councillor posts. TDP leaders objected to his entry into the office. Police personnel attempted to stop him amid protests, but his convoy reportedly crossed the barricades. A police personnel was injured during the incident.
The situation worsened when supporters of both parties allegedly attacked each other with stones and sticks. The clashes spread to SN Colony in Punganur, where several vehicles were damaged. Some cars were reportedly set on fire, while a police vehicle was also vandalised.
Punganur town TDP president Madhu Royal was among those reported injured. Constable Penchalaiah also sustained injuries during the violence.
The incident has raised concerns over security during the local body election process. With nominations underway, the clashes highlight the need for strict police arrangements to prevent further violence and ensure candidates can file their nominations without disruption.
