Telangana Parties Not Ready For Local Polls?

The schedule for local body elections in Telangana is yet to be announced. The Congress is preparing to secure victory by highlighting its welfare schemes for citizens.

Indiramma Indlu, Rythu Bharosa, free electricity, fresh bus services, white ration cards, and fine rice through PDS are among the major benefits being offered to the people. These schemes are aimed at boosting voter confidence.

The Congress won the Assembly elections with 65 seats and later secured 8 Lok Sabha seats. But its image has been dented by a severe urea shortage. Farmers are upset as they stand in long queues for fertiliser bags.

The real estate sector is also facing a slowdown after Congress came to power. This has raised concerns within the party, which is now working hard to repair its image ahead of the local body elections. Whether it can succeed is still uncertain.

The main challenger is the BRS party. However, internal issues have weakened it. With KCR remaining at his farmhouse, the BRS working president has struggled to steer the party alone.

District-level and constituency-level appointments are pending. Party youth are disheartened due to lack of guidance. Second-rung leaders who expected posts are frustrated, while 10 MLAs have already defected. The party has yet to analyse its Lok Sabha defeat, and some leaders are even planning to switch sides.

The BJP, on the other hand, has ambitious plans. It won 8 Assembly and 8 Parliamentary seats. Its strategy is to capture the BRS vote base, with central leadership keen on expanding the party’s footprint in Telangana.

At the grassroots level though, BJP faces hurdles. It is struggling to select ZPTC and MPTC candidates. Local leaders are reluctant to spend money and lack strong communication in their constituencies.

With Congress, BRS, and BJP all facing challenges, none of the three seem fully prepared for the upcoming battle. Whether Telangana Congress can retain its momentum through welfare sops will be the deciding factor.
