BRS working president KTR said that the party had farmers’ interests high on its agenda. He told the media that BRS had four members in Parliament and they would vote for any party that promised 2 lakh tonnes of urea to Telangana farmers by September 9.
When a reporter pointed out that the Center had released urea for Telangana, KTR stressed that there was still a need for 2 lakh tonnes. He added that it did not matter whether the assurance came from Modi or Rahul Gandhi. The party would support whichever side fulfilled the demand.
September 9 is also the day for electing the vice president. NDA nominated CP Radhakrishnan from Tamil Nadu, while the I.N.D.I.A bloc chose B Sudarshan Reddy from Telangana. Telangana CM urged Telugu leaders to back Sudarshan Reddy, asking them to set aside political differences.
Political analysts believe KTR’s statement indicates that BRS may support the BJP-led NDA since it holds power and can resolve the urea issue. However, if the Center does not act, the party may either abstain from voting or consider supporting Sudarshan Reddy as a local candidate.
Observers say that whatever BRS decides will have an impact on its political future. They also point out that KTR had earlier strongly backed Rahul Gandhi’s vote chori campaign against the NDA. This time, however, he is keeping his options open and playing it safe.
