Telangana culture has long been associated with high liquor and meat consumption, especially during festivals and family gatherings. This trend has been confirmed by a survey conducted by the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP).
As per the survey, Telangana ranks fifth in India for liquor and meat consumption. The study also highlighted a sharp rise in beer consumption, particularly in villages. For many citizens, meat and liquor have become a part of daily life.
During festivals like Bonalu and Sankranti, meat and liquor are served as a rule. In rural areas, rituals connected to village deities such as Ellamma and Pochamma often involve sacrifice goats, further adding to the demand.
The survey also reported that the use of tobacco, gutka and cigarettes was higher in rural Telangana compared to urban regions. Alarmingly, it is mostly the youth who are falling into addiction to liquor, gutka and smoking.
Health experts warn that excessive drinking and regular tobacco use can lead to severe health issues. Doctors note a sharp increase in liver diseases, fatty liver and kidney problems among people in the state due to these habits.
