The political fight between the ruling Congress and opposition BRS in Telangana has intensified. As the Congress completes two years in power, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy is aggressively consolidating the party’s position in the state.
The immediate trigger for this political churn is the vacancy of two Rajya Sabha seats. The terms of Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi and BRS MP KR Suresh Reddy are set to end.
Both members will retire by April 9. As a result, the Election Commission is expected to issue notifications for these Rajya Sabha seats sometime in March.
The Congress is widely expected to secure one seat comfortably. However, the contest for the second seat has turned into a numbers game that has caught the attention of political circles.
A total of 40 votes are required to win a Rajya Sabha seat. Currently, the ruling Congress has 66 MLAs, while the BRS has 37 MLAs in the Assembly.
The situation is complicated by the presence of 10 defected MLAs. Though they are technically with the BRS, there is uncertainty over how they will vote in the Rajya Sabha election.
Even without considering the defectors, the BRS appears short by three votes. The BJP has 8 MLAs, MIM has 7 MLAs, and the CPI has 1 MLA, adding further complexity to the equation.
Despite this, the overall balance clearly favours the ruling Congress. Political observers believe the party is well placed to manage the numbers.
Within the Congress, discussions are underway on candidate selection. The party is considering nominating Abhishek Manu Singhvi once again for one seat.
For the second seat, the Congress is keen on fielding a local leader. Several senior leaders who have worked for the party over the years are said to be in the race.
With the stakes high and numbers crucial, political circles are closely watching to see who will eventually get the opportunity to represent Telangana in the Rajya Sabha.
