Sharmila To Rajya Sabha? Jagan Should Be Worried?

YS Sharmila political future speculation

YS Sharmila has largely remained silent after the elections. She spent months before the 2024 polls with a clear aim of defeating her brother. Once that goal was achieved, her political momentum appeared to slow down significantly.

At present, her presence is limited to occasional media interactions. The Congress High Command has also shown limited focus on the Andhra Pradesh unit, as it continues to manage challenges across several other states.

However, political circles around 10 Janpath are abuzz with talk that the party may be considering empowering Sharmila. The idea is to revive Congress prospects in Andhra Pradesh, a state that once served as the party’s strongest base.

Congress had earlier secured some of its highest MP tallies from Andhra Pradesh. That dominance declined sharply after YSR’s death and the subsequent State Bifurcation, which altered the political landscape permanently.

YSR Congress gradually absorbed most of the Congress vote bank in the state. If current reports hold true, this moment could become Sharmila’s biggest political opportunity and a chance to counter her brother’s influence.

Many believe Congress will only be taken seriously in Andhra Pradesh if Sharmila is given real authority. At present, the party appears weak at every organisational level within the state.

If Congress regains strength, it may reclaim a portion of its lost support. Should Jagan face legal trouble or YSR Congress weaken by 2029, space could open up for Congress to recover ground.

Crossing the 5 percent vote share mark would significantly hurt Jagan Mohan Reddy. In the 2024 elections, Congress secured 1.72 percent vote share, up by 0.55 percent from 2019, showing how steep the climb remains.

This phase is being viewed as Sharmila’s chance for political revenge over what supporters describe as a ‘use and throw’ approach. Ultimately, everything depends on the political priorities of the Congress High Command.
