Tesla in India - Nara Lokesh First in the Queue!

Tesla will be available in India soon is what we already reported. But there is huge buzz that Elon Musk will also set up a manufacturing unit in India.

And when the talk of the unit comes up, the name of Lokesh too comes forth. Lokesh had pitched for the manufacturing unit in October 2024, when he met Tesla CFO Vaibhav Taneja during his US visit.

Attractive package, availability of land parcels, south India market and port access were some of the key points that Lokesh pushed on for the EV unit. It is said that the TDP government is keen on setting up the unit in southern part of the state.

Following the meeting between PM Modi and Musk, the AP government has upped its efforts to get the unit home. It has lined up a series of incentives starting with land parcels.

For now, Tesla will make an entry with manufactured cars. But it is imminent that the company will start a manufacturing unit in the country.

It is here that the AP government is prepping up to attract Musk to pick it over other competing states.

Also, in the southern part of AP, there is an ecosystem of auto companies, battery manufacturers and ancillary manufacturers. There is another argument that the southern states see the highest buyers of EV four-wheeler sales and hence it makes sense to have a manufacturing unit out in south.

The 60% of car sales happen in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Telangana and Karnataka.

But this is not the first time AP has approached Elon Musk. Babu and Musk signed an MoU in 2017, when Musk promised to extend technological expertise for two solar energy storage units of 4MW in Rayalaseema, according to a story in Economic Times.
