TRS Muslim Appeasement Politics at Historical Moment

Lok Sabha has passed the legislation banning Triple Talaq in Muslim Community. This Bill is seen as one of the radical reforms which will help the empowerment of women from Muslim Community. But even at this juncture, TRS has resorted to Political Calculations.

TRS MPs have abstained the Parliament when the Bill was taken up for discussion in Lok Sabha. This seems to be aimed at impressing MIM President, Asaduddin Owaisi who tried his level best to stall the bill. TRS seems to be thinking that this move is anti-Muslim.

Asaduddin had moved an amendment to stop the legislation but has got only two votes for it. One being his. Owaisi has claimed that Modi’s dream of having more Muslims in jail will be achieved with this bill and nothing more. He went on to say that justice should be done to “20 lakh abandoned women” from all religions, including “our bhabhi in Gujarat”, in an apparent reference to Modi’s wife.

The draft bill includes criminal provisions, including a jail term of up to three years and a fine. Triple Talaq is a religious practice through which men can abandon their wives by mere pronouncing Talaq Three Times. It has to be seen if it passes in Rajya Sabha where the government has no majority.
