Two Powerful Earthquakes Shake Bangkok, Myanmar

Two powerful earthquakes hit Bangkok in Thailand and Myanmar. 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit Myanmar, while strong tremors were felt in parts of Thailand and Vietnam.

The epicenter of the quake was in Myanmar. But no major damage or life loss was reported immediately. The greater Bangkok area is known for its hi-rise apartments and is home to 17 million people.

Alarms went off in buildings when the earthquake hit at 1.30pm local time. People were evacuated from hi-rise apartment blocks and hotels. The Prime Minister of Thailand called for an emergency meeting.

The tremor was strong enough to spill water from pools and top floors of hi-rise buildings. Visuals of a hi-rise under construction falling down have sent netizens into a tizzy.

The metro and rail services have been stalled in Thailand. About 43 people are reported to have been missing in Bangkok. It is thought that they might be stuck under the rubble.




Myanmar has been struck by another quake of 6.4 magnitude around 12 minutes after the first quake. The country being one of the poorest countries, is least equipped to handle the disaster.
