The core story of Jana Nayagan follows the storyline of the original Bhagavanth Kesarii. Vijay’s character takes in Viji (Mamitha Baiju), raises her as his own, and has the sole goal of sending her to the army.
However, the rest of the packaging around this emotional core takes a completely commercial route. While the film largely sticks to the core storyline of the Telugu original, the added commercial elements change the overall experience.
Performances
Vijay’s performance to be very honest is something that leaves very little to discuss. There is nothing much to complain about, but at the same time, there is nothing particularly impressive to praise either. He does what he has done before, but unfortunately, there isn’t even a single scene in the entire film where we feel he completely owns the moment or delivers something memorable.
Pooja Hegde’s track is half-baked and forgettable. Mamitha Baiju’s character, which should have been one of the most important parts of the film, is completely butchered compared to the Telugu original. The character presentation and writing are extremely poor, making both the role and her performance entirely forgettable.
Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan, the remake of the Telugu original Bhagavanth Kesari makes it clear right from the beginning that the core storyline has been retained. Vijay and Mamitha Baiju’s track is very similar to Balakrishna and Sreeleela’s track from the original.
While this core emotional track remains intact, the rest of the film, including Bobby Deol’s character, the villain track, and the guns smuggling angle, follows an overly used and outdated commercial template. This takes away from the actual purpose of the story, which revolves around the hero adopting a girl child and helping her fulfill her father’s dream.
The entire first half, especially the silly and absurd villain track involving Bobby Deol and the sea action sequence with TV serial-level graphics, fails to work either as a commercial entertainer or as a sincere adaptation of the original story.
In the entire first half, there isn’t a single element that truly stands out.
The entire second half is a painful experience, especially for those who have watched the original. It completely ignores the soul of the film, which is the emotional bond between Vijay and Viji (Mamitha Baiju’ character), along with the dream of making her join the military, the reluctance and struggles she goes through to achieve it.
Everything that made that emotional core work has disappeared in this remake. Instead, we are left with a mindless Bobby Deol track and a Prakash Raj political track that fail to add value to the story.
The most disappointing aspect is that the director heavily relies on action sequences by altering the original story of Bhagavanth Kesari. However, what we get are cheap, video game-like visuals, with low-quality gunfire and explosion effects that feel extremely awkward to watch in a big star film like Vijay’s.
For most of the second half, the director completely sidelines Viji’s character and brings her back only for a couple of scenes in the final stretch. The long, never-ending climax fight tests your patience to the core.
Overall, Jana Nayagan feels like an unnecessary outing for CM Vijay at this stage. It neither adds goodwill to him nor do the cheap, video game-style action sequences provide the entertainment
Performances by Other Actors
Bobby Deol gets a significant amount of screen time in the film, but his character is utterly absurd. Everything surrounding his track, including the action sequences and the way his character is presented, feels awkward and poorly executed. It comes across as outright bad.
Prakash Raj plays a politician and does his role well, but there is nothing particularly noteworthy about his character either.
The other supporting actors, including Priyamani, Nassar, Sunil and others, also don’t have much to offer or anything significant worth mentioning.
Anirudh Ravichander composes the music, but the songs don’t really work either as standalone tracks or visually within the film. The background score is also largely ineffective, and there isn’t much to blame Anirudh for, as the film itself offers him very little scope to elevate the proceedings.
The cinematography by Sathyan Sooryan is quite poor, and Pradeep Ragav’s editing is highly uneven, with choppy cuts and a runtime that feels unnecessarily stretched and tiring.
The production values by KVN Productions are not up to the expectations of a star film featuring Vijay.

Firstly, it feels like watching a decade-old template film because of its treatment. On top of that, it takes the core storyline of #BhagavanthKesari which focuses on girl empowerment, and turns it into a forced political campaign, completely ignoring the soul of the original. Bobby Deol’s track is a big mess in the mix.
This neither adds goodwill to ‘hero’ Vijay nor delivers the action entertainment with gunfire effects that look like they were borrowed from a low-budget video game!!
It’s unfortunate that #Vijay’s final film has ended up this way.
Jana Nayagan Disappointing First Half!
Though the core storyline is the same as #BhagavanthKesari with changes to the villain track, the treatment feels utterly outdated and follows an overly used commercial template rather than presenting a sincere story.
