Kolkata has been ranked as the safest city in India for the third consecutive year, recording the least number of cognizable offenses per lakh population among metropolises. Like every year, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) issued a report on the same.
The eastern metropolis reported 86.5 cases of cognizable offenses per lakh people in 2022, followed by Pune (280.7) and Hyderabad (299.2). Cognizable crimes are those for which cases are registered under sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Special and Local Laws (SLL).
After a comparison among 19 cities with over 20 lakh population, NCRB issued these rankings.
