The Indian government has appointed 12 nodal officers to combat movie piracy and remove pirated content from digital platforms. The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting made this decision to address the film industry’s annual loss of approximately Rs 20,000 crores due to piracy.
Union Minister Anurag Thakur stated that these officers, located in the Central Bureau of Film Certification (CBFC), will register piracy-related cases and take action within 4 hours.
The recently passed Cinematograph Bill imposes strict penalties for piracy, including imprisonment for a minimum of three months and fines of Rs 8 lakhs, with the maximum jail term extending up to three years and a fine of five percent of the total cost.
