6 Months Jail For Live-In: Here’s Why

live in relationship

Uttarakhand has become the first state in India to impose a Uniform Civil Code(UCC) with the introduction of new set of regulations for couples that are currently in a live-in relationship.

From now on, every couple in Uttarakhand that wishes to be in a live-in relationship will have to register with the state government. A web portal has been created for this purpose and it will be used to register the details of the live-in relationship couples. A bill will then be generated through the portal.

The bill will serve as a tender of verification and it has to be used by the live-in couple to stay in rooms, houses, and PGs.

The participants of the registered relationship should not be married to anyone else at that point, or should be in a relationship with anyone else illegally. It is also mandated for the couple to have the consent of their parents for their live-in relationship.

Flouting these regulations and living together will invite Rs 25,000 fine or 6 months in jail, or in some cases, both.
