According to the recent report by TomTom, which is a Dutch location technology specialist, Bengaluru has maintained its title as the country’s most congested city in 2023. Even though there was a marginal improvement in the average time to cover 10 kilometers, Bengaluru only slipped to the sixth position globally, from its second-place ranking in 2022.

The data reveals that the residents of this tech and startup hub spent an average of 28 minutes and 10 seconds to cover 10 kilometers in 2023. This is a slight improvement from 29 minutes in the previous year.

The average speed during rush hours is as low as 18 km/h, resulting in residents losing approximately 132 hours annually due to traffic congestion.

Beside Benguluru, Pune managed to rank seventh with an average speed of 19 km/h, Delhi is at the 44th position with 24 km/h, and Mumbai at the 54th position with 23 km/h.

The report further identified that September 27 (Wednesday) was the worst day for travel in Bengaluru in 2023. The average travel time to cover 10 kilometers was as high as 32 minutes and 50 seconds. Moreover, Fridays, especially from 6 pm to 7 pm, were the most challenging time for commuters, with an average travel time of 36 minutes and 20 seconds.

It also highlighted the potential for savings for Bengaluru residents by adjusting their travel habits. The analysis suggested that working from home on Fridays alone could result in savings of 51 hours of travel time and 194 kg of emissions annually. Extending remote work to three days a week could lead to even more substantial reductions – 155 hours of travel time and 587 kg of emissions.
