In a strategic move, global athletic footwear and apparel giant Adidas is set to establish its first and only Global Capacity Centre (GCC) in Asia outside China, choosing Chennai as the preferred location. The decision underscores a growing trend among multinational companies, recognizing Tamil Nadu’s appeal for setting up GCCs.

Chennai’s strategic positioning along the East Coast has played a pivotal role, providing exceptional connectivity through ports, airports, rail, and road networks.

Industry experts believe that this move by Adidas could pave the way for other multinational corporations to follow suit, further solidifying India’s standing as an attractive destination for skilled workforce and a robust business environment.

Akhil Kapoor, Vice President of GBS Global Procurement and Head of GBS India, will lead the operations at the Global Business Services (GBS) hub in Chennai. The hub is poised to play a crucial role in key processes such as source-to-pay (S2P), financial planning & analysis (FP&A), invoice-to-cash (I2C), and record-to-report (R2R).

Adidas aims to seamlessly integrate its Chennai hub with existing ones in Porto (Portugal), Dalian (China), Bogota (Colombia), and North America, effectively catering to the company’s global operations. The German corporation anticipates significant growth in its Chennai centre and plans to add high-quality resources over the next three to five years.

This strategic move aligns with the recent surge of multinational companies investing in India to tap into the country’s abundant software skills.

The establishment of Adidas’ GCC in Chennai is a testament to India’s growing importance in the global business landscape and its ability to attract major players seeking to harness the talent pool in the country.

Tamil Nadu Industries Minister TRB Rajaa’s recent statement, emphasizing Chennai’s bid to become the ‘premier choice’ for GCCs and research and development centres in India, further highlights the region’s attractiveness for international corporations.

With all this, Adidas has now set its sights on expanding its operations in Chennai, marking a significant milestone in the region’s pursuit of becoming a hub for global business services.
