Harvard is ‘the University’ for students all around the globe. Many consider it as the best that one could get in terms of academics, others choose it for the brand value it provides. It is extremely difficult and expensive to get into Harvard University and one expects its students to be serious about their studies.
The same is expected from the courses offered at the University. But, this time Harvard tried to tap into pop culture and offered a course on ‘Taylor Swift’, the singer-songwriter who had won her fourth Album of the Year at the Grammy’s last weekend.
A video has gone viral on the internet where a student shared the insights from her first ever ‘Taylor Swift’ lecture. It is a part of the English literature course and students get to watch Swift’s interviews and songs on YouTube and play it on piano too. The students and the teacher are extremely joyous for being a part of the class given they are die-hard fans of Swift.
If Americans have to teach songwriters writing about failed relationships in English literature then it does raise serious concerns over the quality of education they are providing!
