Police in India have often been criticized for their inactions when it comes to cracking down on traffic rule violations. In such scenarios, Hyderabad police have set an example for other police departments by taking mass action against bike riders who have installed modified silencers.
Installing modified silencers on bikes results in excessive air and sound pollution and is against the traffic laws. However, many people, usually youngsters, install these silencers because of the sound it makes. Hyderabad police destroyed nearly 1000 such silencers together using a road roller. Section 190(2) of the Motor Vehicle Act prohibits pressure horns and silencers that make a noise of more than 80 decibels.
Even though there’s a hefty fine and even a provision of imprisonment for violating this rule, the craze for these modified parts is not going down.
The revised penalty includes a fine of ₹10,000 and imprisonment of upto 6 months. The action has been lauded by the commuters in Hyderabad. Some netizens also expressed their concern regarding the open and legal selling of these modified functional parts. One of them pointed out how easily these parts are available on e-commerce sites questioning why the action is against only the riders.
