Hyd: Flyover or Swimming Pool? Public Outrage

A newly constructed flyover in Hyderabad shocked residents after it flooded like a ground-level street, raising questions on drainage and planning.

Videos surfaced on social media showing vehicles stranded and water logging knee-deep across the stretch, making the flyover look more like a swimming pool than an elevated road.

The bizarre incident occurred after a heavy downpour on Wednesday. The flyover, located in LB Nagar area, was designed to ease traffic congestion, but poor water exit systems exposed a major design flaw.

Commuters were seen navigating the flooded flyover carefully, while many vehicles stalled midway due to engine failure.

Citizens took to social media with memes, sarcasm, and sharp criticism. One user posted: “Engineering marvel of the year – a flyover that doubles up as a pool!” Another joked: “Why not block traffic and let kids swim here until monsoon ends?”

Urban planners and engineers called it a clear case of negligence. Flyovers are elevated for a reason – to avoid waterlogging and smoothen traffic. If it’s flooding, the drainage system was either not planned or executed properly, said a retired municipal official.

GHMC authorities claimed an inquiry has been ordered. Initial reports suggest either blocked drain outlets or absence of proper slope for water to flow out.

With rains expected to continue, Hyderabadis now fear more such surprises from the city’s smart infrastructure. For many, the flooded flyover has become the latest symbol of flashy projects with poor groundwork.

As one frustrated local summed it up: We wanted flyovers to escape traffic – not drown in it.
