Indian Woman’s Careless Loss Against Apple!

In a recent legal setback for a Bengaluru resident, her pursuit of justice against tech giant Apple Inc. concluded in defeat after a dispute regarding the repair of her MacBook Pro. The 31-year-old, who had invested Rs 1.74 lakh in the 13-inch MacBook Pro and an additional Rs 22,900 for AppleCare+ service, found herself in a legal entanglement following an unfortunate incident of spilled coffee.

Upon seeking assistance at an Apple store for repairs, she discovered that the AppleCare+ plan did not fully cover the damage resulting from the liquid spill. Dishearteningly, her laptop was returned unrepaired, prompting her to file a complaint with the consumer disputes redressal commission in Bengaluru.

The complaint alleged unfair trade practices by Apple India Pvt Ltd, iCare Ample Technologies, and the Imagine Store.

However, her efforts proved futile as the consumer forum sided with Apple India, emphasizing that the AppleCare+ plan specifically excludes coverage for accidental or unexpected internal damage caused by liquid spillage. The forum also highlighted a discrepancy in her actions, revealing that she had sought repairs at an authorized Apple service center, a detail reportedly not disclosed to the court.

The Bengaluru consumer disputes redressal commission, accustomed to handling grievances against sellers, has become a battleground for consumer rights.

In a contrasting case last year, a woman successfully sued furniture giant IKEA over a seemingly trivial matter. She challenged the Rs 20 charge for a carry bag, arguing that retail outlets cannot levy fees for bags displaying their branding. In a ruling based on this principle, IKEA was directed to refund the charge and pay Rs 3,000 in compensation.

The outcome of this legal battle serves as a reminder of the intricacies within warranty and service agreements, urging consumers to thoroughly understand the terms and conditions before investing in extended protection plans for their electronic devices.
