Is India Becoming Safer On Road?

One of the biggest concerns of the ministry of Road Transport and Highways in India was the high number of fatalities on Indian roads. Indian roads have long been considered dangerous to drive on and high speed and reckless driving kills hundreds of thousands of people every year. However, with the advancement in road infrastructure, there is an indication that the Indian roads are getting more and more safe with time.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways released a press statement informing the progress made in curbing road accidents in the last few years. The numbers suggest that although the total number of deaths in these accidents has increased in the last 10 years, the number of deaths per 10,000 vehicles has decreased significantly.

In 2013, the number of fatalities per 10,000 vehicles stood at 7.6. This number has dropped to 4.3 in 2022. However, the total number of deaths in these road accidents increased from 1,35,572 in 2013 to 1,68,491 in 2022.

In the past ten years, the road infrastructure has developed evidently at a grand scale. The quest for safe and rapid transit requires equal cooperation from commuters as well. The strict adherence to the traffic rules is the next step in making our roads more safe.
