Kashmir Faces Wrath Of Nature! Tourism Down

Gulmarg, renowned for its picturesque winter landscapes and thriving skiing destinations, is facing an unexpected challenge this season. The typically snow-covered slopes of Gulmarg are currently barren, as the Kashmir Valley experiences an unusual dry spell.

According to meteorological experts, this deviation from the norm is attributed to the El Niño phenomenon. The warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean is impacting global weather patterns, affecting precipitation in Kashmir. The region has witnessed a substantial 79% deficit in rainfall during December, and the anticipated snowfall has yet to materialize.

Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the Kashmir Meteorological Centre, highlighted the absence of precipitation throughout December and early January. The weather forecast suggests that these dry conditions are likely to persist until around January 16, with no significant precipitation expected in the near future.

This departure from the usual pattern of early snowfall, observed in recent years, is particularly pronounced this year. The influence of El Niño, felt since November, is expected to extend into the following month, disrupting Kashmir’s customary climatic patterns.

The lack of snow is not only disappointing for locals but also for winter sports enthusiasts who flock to Gulmarg for activities like skiing and snowboarding. Gulmarg, despite these challenges, is gearing up to host the 4th edition of the Khelo India Winter Games from February 2 to 6.

With the success of its previous editions, the renowned ski resort is once again the focal point for this prestigious event. The Khelo India Winter Games will feature competitions in Skiing, Snowboarding, and Ski Mountaineering. Additionally, Ladakh will host Ice events such as Ice Skating and Ice Hockey.

More than 400 athletes, representing various States, Union Territories, and the Army, are expected to participate. Despite the climatic challenges, the organizers are optimistic about delivering a successful event and are closely monitoring weather updates to ensure the safety and enjoyment of participants and spectators alike.
