Online scams are no longer limited to suspicious links or unknown emails. They are now appearing on platforms used daily for entertainment, shopping and social interaction. This makes them more dangerous as they often look harmless at first.
These scams are designed to blend in with regular online activity. They appear as ads, gaming offers or trusted deals. Many users engage with them without suspicion, as they come through familiar platforms they already trust.
The Hyderabad cyber crime case highlights how advanced such frauds have become. A 24-year-old woman reportedly entered an online betting and casino platform after clicking an Instagram gaming advertisement. The entry point appeared normal and safe.
What makes this case more calculated is the method used to build trust. Initial withdrawals were reportedly allowed. This tactic is often used to gain confidence before encouraging larger deposits from victims over time.
Once trust was established, the woman allegedly transferred nearly ₹30 lakh through multiple UPI transactions. Later, her bank accounts were frozen and lien-marked. The sudden shift exposed the scale of the fraud.
The investigation also revealed the wider network behind the operation. Police reported that over ₹26 crore was processed using fake payment gateways like CloseX Pay, Trustly Pay and Accult Pay. Mule accounts and shell company documents were also used.
Authorities arrested four accused and seized several items. These included laptops, mobile phones, cheque books, stamps and cash. The evidence indicates a structured and organised digital fraud network rather than an isolated incident.
This case highlights a growing concern around online betting scams. As digital platforms evolve, fraud tactics are also becoming more complex. Without proper awareness and stricter checks, such scams can lead to serious financial losses.
